What does a restaurant cook do?

Prepare, season, and cook dishes such as soups, meats, vegetables, or desserts in restaurants. May order supplies, keep records and accounts, price items on menu, or plan menu.

What's a typical day like?

Before service, they wash and cut ingredients and set up their station. During the rush, they cook dishes to order and check temperatures; afterward, they may restock supplies and store food safely.

How to get this job

In the US, many cooks start as kitchen helpers and learn on the job; a diploma usually isn't required. Culinary school is another route; apprenticeships often last about a year and typically require age 17+ and a diploma or equivalent.
