What does a chef do?

What's a typical day like?
Before service, a chef checks ingredients and supplies, plans the menu, and makes sure the kitchen is clean and ready. During the rush, they guide cooks, check food quality and presentation, and keep orders moving safely.
How to get this job
In the U.S., finish high school and build kitchen experience, often starting as a line cook. Culinary school, an apprenticeship, or high-school training can help; local food-handler certification may be required, but chef certification is optional.
