How much does a ship captain make?

What's a typical day like?

They track the ship’s position and direction, take bridge watches, and direct the crew when the captain is off duty. In port, they oversee cargo, repairs, and logs; harbor pilots guide ships through local channels.

Start as a deckhand and build sea time, or graduate from a maritime academy to qualify as a third mate. Earn Coast Guard credentials and vessel-specific endorsements through documented sea service, training, and exams, then gain experience to advance to captain.
