What does a bookkeeper do?

Compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial records complete. Perform any combination of routine calculating, posting, and verifying duties to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records. May also check the accuracy of figures, calculations, and postings pertaining to business transactions recorded by other workers. Excludes “Payroll and Timekeeping Clerks” (43-3051).

What's a typical day like?

Bookkeepers enter bills and receipts into accounting software, then compare records to check that the numbers match. If they spot a difference, they investigate and report it; they may also prepare a report showing money in and out.

How to get this job

In the U.S., finish high school and, if possible, take college accounting courses; employers’ requirements differ. New clerks learn the software and tasks on the job, and professional certification is optional.

Vocational school or a few years' experience (preparation level 3 of 5)

Good for people who like keeping things organized and leading and selling.
