How much does a respiratory therapist make?

In the United States, pay can differ with experience, credentials and specialty, and the kind of employer, such as a hospital or doctor’s office. Location and working nights, weekends, or holidays can matter too.

Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check, and operate equipment.

What's a typical day like?

They check breathing, run lung tests, give treatments, and track oxygen and other signs. In emergencies, they may connect and monitor ventilators, while also teaching patients and families how to use breathing equipment.

After high school, complete an accredited respiratory-therapy associate degree program with supervised clinical practice. At 18 or older, take the NBRC credentialing exam(s) and meet your state’s licensing rules; Alaska does not require a license.
