How much does a metal layout worker make?

In the United States, experienced workers with strong blueprint, math, and precision-measuring skills may earn more. Pay also varies by industry, employer, location, and how complex the job is; aerospace and shipbuilding are different workplaces. Extra hours or shift premiums can change total pay.

What's a typical day like?

They read a blueprint, calculate where cuts, holes, and welds should go, then mark the lines on metal with a scribe or soapstone. They check measurements and align pieces so welders can join them.

In the U.S., finish high school or earn a GED and build math, blueprint-reading, and shop skills. Then start in an entry-level job or registered lay-out worker/shipfitter apprenticeship, learning on the job; training can last days to a year.
