What does a mechatronics tech do?

Operate, test, maintain, or adjust unmanned, automated, servomechanical, or electromechanical equipment. May operate unmanned submarines, aircraft, or other equipment to observe or record visual information at sites such as oil rigs, crop fields, buildings, or for similar infrastructure, deep ocean exploration, or hazardous waste removal. May assist engineers in testing and designing robotics equipment.

What's a typical day like?

They might read a wiring diagram, measure parts, or solder a small circuit. Then they test a robot or automated machine, track down problems, and record the results for engineers.

How to get this job

After high school (often around 18), earn a mechatronics or electromechanics certificate or associate degree at a technical school or community college; a registered apprenticeship is another route. BLS lists certification as optional, not a required license or exam.

Vocational school or a few years' experience (preparation level 3 of 5)

Good for people who like building and doing and keeping things organized.
