How much does a bricklayer make?

In the U.S., experience, skill, extra credentials, specialty work, the employer, and location can all affect a bricklayer’s pay. Overtime can add work hours, while bad weather may interrupt outdoor jobs.

Lay and bind building materials, such as brick, structural tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra-cotta block, with mortar and other substances, to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers, and other structures. Installers of mortarless segmental concrete masonry wall units are classified in “Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers” (37-3011). Excludes “Stonemasons” (47-2022).

What's a typical day like?

A bricklayer starts by reading plans, measuring the wall, and mixing mortar. Then they set bricks or blocks in rows, check each line with a level, and scrape away extra mortar.

In the U.S., finish high school or equivalent, then train on the job or in an apprenticeship; one registered program lasts about four years. Some programs require age 18, and aspiring contractors should check local license rules.
