How much does a boat mechanic make?

In the U.S., experienced mechanics with special engine skills or certifications may earn more, and large marinas or dealerships may pay more than small seasonal shops. Location and busy-season overtime also affect earnings.

What's a typical day like?

They inspect engines, change oil or filters, and use tools and gauges to find problems. After a repair, they may run the motor in a water-filled test tank or take the boat onto the water to check it.

In the U.S., you can begin marine-tech training in high school; afterward, a diploma/GED and on-the-job learning or a marina apprenticeship are common routes. ABYC technician certification requires a test and two years’ work experience.
